Jack Dorsey est le cofondateur du service de microblogging Twitter. En 2010, Twitter compte plus de 105 millions d'utilisateurs qui "tweetent" quelque 55 millions de fois par jour.
Jusqu'à l'âge de 14 ans, Jack Dorsey a grandi à Saint Louis dans le Missouri. Il étudie la science et la technologie à l'université du Missouri avant d'intégrer l'Université de New York.
En 2000, il crée un service qui permet d'envoyer des messages à partir du Web afin de trouver rapidement un taxi. L'idée de communiquer en temps réel lui vient notamment de la messagerie instantanée d'AOL.
Il se rapproche des fondateurs de la startup Odeo Inc, Noah Glass et Evan Williams. Noah Glass commercialise AudioBlogger, une application permettant de publier des fichiers audio sur un blog au moyen d'un téléphone. Evan Williams est connu pour être le co-fondateur de la société Pyra Labs qui est à l'origine de la plateforme de blogs Blogger, rachetée par Google en 2003.
Ensemble ils créent un prototype de Twitter. L'idée de départ est de permettre aux utilisateurs de décrire ce qu'ils sont en train de faire via SMS. Ouvert au public le 13 juillet 2006, la première version s'intitule stat.us puis twittr, en référence au site de partage de photos Flickr puis Twitter, son nom actuel.
Jusqu'au 16 octobre 2008, Jack Dorsey est le chef de la direction. Il devient ensuite président du conseil d'administration et Williams lui succède.
Grâce à sa simplicité d'utilisation, Twitter gagne vite en popularité. En 2007, Twitter remporte le prix South by Southwest Web Award dans la catégorie blog.
En mai 2009, Dorsey annonce son nouveau projet, Square. A l'origine le nom de code est Squirrel (écureuil). Il s'agit d'une start-up de paiement mobile qui permet aux gens de recevoir des paiements par carte de crédit grâce à un petit appareil branché sur leur téléphone portable.
